Welcome to already episode #30 where we are still touring through the Netherlands. DThe province of Noord Holland. Image derived from Wikipedia.uring this trip we’re passing through Groningen and Friesland. This time to visit Noord Holland by way of the Afsluitdijk, the dyke the closed down a sea and made it possible to reclaim land.

Next monday May 28th 2007 it is exactly 75 years ago that Queen Wilhelmina opened this connection. Probably this is the most photographed and filmed part of the Netherlands. So sit back, relax and learn all about this amazing part of our country!

Here’s what you’ll learn. For a change it is a conversation again with a special guest:

  • Now that I’ve seen Groningen I’d like to travell to another province| Nu ik Groningen gezien heb, wil ik graag naar een andere provincie reizen;
  • Where would you like to go? | Waar zou je heen willen gaan?
  • I feel the attraction of Noord Holland | Noord Holland trekt me wel aan;
  • Ah smart choice, since there is a lot to see | Ah goede keuze, want daar is veel te zien;
  • Yeah of course Amsterdam is in Noord Holland | Ja natuurlijk ligt Amsterdam in Noord Holland;
  • Oh sure, but there is more | Oh natuurlijk, maar er is meer;
  • Tell me! | Vertel!
  • There is the east coast that used to be the shore of the Southern Sea, but is now the IJsselmeer | Er is bijvoorbeeld de oostkust dat de kust van de Zuiderzee was. Dat is nu het IJsselmeer;
  • With those historic places? | Met die historische plaatsen?
  • Yes, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Medemblik, Monnickendam, Edam, the Isle of Marken and the remarkable fishing town Volendam | Ja Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Medemblik, Monnickendam, Edam, het eiland Marken en het opmerkelijke vissersdorp Volendam;
  • Volendam isn’t that the place where some people still dress traditionally? | Is Volendam niet de plaats waar sommige mensen zich traditioneel kleden?
  • Yes, indeed. | Ja, inderdaad
  • Cool. Can I get to Noord Holland by driving across the Afsluitdijk? | Gaaf. kan ik naar Noord Holland komen via de Afsluitdijk?
  • Yes. But you have to go by car or bus, since there is no rail. | Ja. Maar je moet wel met de auto of de bus gaan, want er ligt geen spoor.
  • Thanks |Dank je wel
  • Have fun! | Veel plezier!

After the lesson there is some additional information on the Afsluitdijk.

A special thank you or the real kudo’s go out to Tim Horsting, my nephew, who features in this episode.

  1. Hallo,
    Would you be so kind as to let me know how one would casually say good night when leaving a chat room. Like rest well or sleep tight as an example. I have been talking to my friend Johan for 9 yrs now and i think it is time I learned Dutch. Soon as I figure out how to get to lesson one, I will start doing so. Hey !I am old give me a break. 🙂
    Thank You.
    Sincerely,
    Carla

  2. Hi Carla,

    You say “goede nacht” to say good night!

    Coming to your question on how to scroll back: At the very bottom of the page there is a link to go to “previous entries” of the articles. When scrolling back a couple of pages you will discover that you ultimately get to the first page. I hope you enjoy the lessons!! Thanks for listening!

    Cheers,

    Brenno
    p.s. Age doesn’t matter.

  3. Hey Carla,

    A common Dutch chatter would say something like this:

    Welterusten!
    or even shorter: TRUSTE !

    … meaning: sleep well.

    Groetjes,
    Yorien
