Laura speaks Dutch

After all the celebrations we did in the podcast on Sinterklaas we would easily forget that we still have to finish our tour through the country. We visited Limburg and now we are going backup up. Above Limburg is Noord Brabant a province we discussed a couple of weeks ago. Above that is my home-province and that is Gelderland. It is a pretty nice and maybe the name doesn’t ring a bell, but when I tell you that Arnhem is the capital many people will have some sigh of recognition. So let’s go home! In a month or so I will do a second podcast on Gelderland, because there is so much more to tell.

Today’s lesson is very long, but there is a lot of info to share.

Here is what you will learn:

• We are visiting the Gelderland-province | We gaan op bezoek in de provincie Gelderland
• It has several nice villages and some cities like Nijmegen and Arnhem | Het heeft diverse leuke dorpen en enkele steden zoals Nijmegen en Arnhem
• Thanks to hiking Nijmegen is internationally well known | Nijmegen is dankzij het wandelen internationaal bekend
• Every year “de vierdaagse” is organized | Ieder jaar wordt de vierdaagse georganiseerd
• This is a four day hike where participants walk 40 kilometers or 25 miles every day | Dit is is een vierdaagse wandeltocht waar de deelnemers iedere dag 40 kilometer of 25 mijl lopen
• You have to be well prepared, because it is quite tiring | Je moet goed voorbereid zijn, want is behoorlijk vermoeiend
• But it is one big party as well for watchers as walkers | Maar het is ook een groot feest voor toeschouwers en wandelaars

• The city of Arnhem is the capital of Gelderland | De stad Arnhem is de hoofdstad van Gelderland
• It is known for operation Market Garden in the Second World War | Het is bekend dankzij de operatie Market Garden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog
• This was an effort by the British Army to liberate the Netherlands from German occupation | Dit was een poging van het Britse leger om Nederland te bevrijden van Duitse overheersing
• The operation failed | De operatie mislukte
• The soldiers never crossed the bridge over the Rijn-river in Arnhem | Het lukte de soldaten niet om de brug over de Rijn in Arnhem te passeren
• It was a terrible, defining battle | Het was een verschrikkelijke, maar bepalende slag
• People know it as the “Battle of Arnhem” | Mensen kennen het als de “De Slag om Arnhem”
• Every year we still commemorate that truly heroic effort | Ieder jaar gedenken we die heldhaftige poging
• There is still a special, hard to describe bond between the people there and the Brittons | Er is nog altijd een bijzondere, moeilijk te omschrijven band, tussen de mensen daar en de Britten
• Recently Germans started to join the services | Sinds kort nemen ook Duitsers aan de herdenking deel
• We realize that everybody loses in a war | We realiseren ons dat iedereen in een oorlog verliest

• I live close to Arnhem in a villeage called Ede | Ik woon dicht bij Arnhem in een dorp dat Ede heet
• We have a beautiful nature surrounding us | We hebben een schitterende natuur om ons heen
